Hoods are intense, spectacular bondage instruments. Visually spectacular, and intense for the bottom. Thus there may be a temptation on the part of the Top to make the session less intense by not tieing/lacing/fitting/sizing the hood too tightly. This can bring about 2 adverse effects, both of which are potentially very serious, and both of which I know from personal experience. The first is that, if you do not tie the hood to a tight fit, it will be floppy around the face. This creates what is technically called "dead space". Which means that, if the bottom's mouth and/or nose holes is/are not directly against the hood material, but rather in some kind of "pocket" because of the floppy fit, he or she will re-breathe the very air he or she has just expired. This stale air is of course poor in oxygen and rich in carbon. Re-breathe it enough times, and serious trouble could happen. Just a small dead space is enough to cause the COČ rate to double. So watch for dead space, and eliminate it. The second issue with a loose hood is that the bottom can be tempted to get out of it. While escaping is a perfectly legitimate activity for a bottom, trying to get out of a hood can be very dangerous. Because it involves dislodging the hood, and thus, for a while, the bottom cannot breathe because his/her mouth and nose are no longer facing the mouth and nose holes. If the hood is loose enough, and the bottom is successful fine. But, if not, things are not always reversible, and the hood might end up suffocating the bottom. This is especially true in case of abandonment play. Conversely, it should be said that tieing a hood too tightly and interrupting circulation around the bottom's head is also liable to create problems; but that requires some serious lacing, or a poorly designed/shaped/manufactured hood. Hence my preference for well-designed and constructed hoods. The conclusion: hoods are great. But leaving them loose is a misplaced attempt at softening thigs up. Remember: dead bottoms don't worship!

Remember that hood safety depends very much on the material that the hood is made from and the style of the hood. All hoods are not the same, and saftey tips will vary depending on the hood.

What about duct-tape hoods? Should they be wrapped as tight as possible?
I finally created a perfect duct-tape head. It went well with the new metal bondage chair and straight jacket. With a neck iron no wiggling was allowed which made it easy for me to wrap in an aesthetically pleasing fashion...

Each time a hood is placed on a head it is an unique fitting..even if you have used the same one on the same person before. The subbie could have swelling issues based on diet or water rention and sweat will change the breathablity of the hood too.
Philber can you share about your fabulous new hood from Fetters?
